Tony Blair heeft bij zijn afscheid een lang, persoonlijk essay geschreven voor The Economist, waarin hij nog eens aantoont een geniale communicator te zijn. Het gaat grotendeels over internationale zaken, maar een paar stukjes gaan over het binnenland. Waaronder:
“Social exclusion needs special focus. From 1979 to 1997 the incomes of the richest 20% in Britain grew faster (2.5%) than the incomes of the poorest 20% (0.8%). That has been reversed. Since 1997 the incomes of the poorest have risen faster (2.2%) than the richest (2%). However, this masks a tail of under-achievers, the socially excluded. The rising tide does not lift their ships. This issue of social exclusion is common throughout Western nations.”
Tony laat hier met getallen, die goed blijven hangen, zien dat hij het voor de onderkant van de samenleving beter heeft gedaan dat zijn voorgangers. Tegelijkertijd geeft hij toe – maar op een minder prominente manier – dat er nog steeds een klasse van uitgeslotenen bestaat, waarbij hij als verzachtende omstandigheid aanvoert dat dit overal zo is. Eerlijk, maar wel op zo’n manier dat het positieve het best blijft hangen. Zoals ik al zei: geniaal gecommuniceerd.
